About Me
Hi, I'm Matthew - a dedicated, bilingual news reporter with a unique blend of media expertise and financial acumen.
I'm guessing it's not every day you meet a news reporter with a passion for sport, several years of experience in print, audio, and visual broadcast, a unique background as a CPA-Qualified Accountant and a Commerce Degree, who has worked in tax prosecutions - but that's what sets me apart.
My strong analytical skills and data-driven approach enable me to break down complex issues and present them clearly to audiences, making information accessible and relatable.
After earning a Bachelor of Commerce from La Trobe University and CPA certification, I transitioned into media, completing a Diploma of Sports Journalism and Match Reporting (with high distinctions) and a Graduate Diploma in Journalism from RMIT. This career shift was driven by my desire to create meaningful impact through storytelling.
Born and bred in Melbourne, Australia, I come from a family of immigrants. My parents arrived in the 1960s and later met in Melbourne. My father, the eldest son, was thrust into a leadership role after the sudden passing of his father back home. Determined to support his family, he worked tirelessly, sending any money he saved to support his mother and siblings. His extenuating circumstances meant he could not invest in undertaking courses to improve his communication skills. Despite his intelligence and capability, his lack of English language skills meant he missed out on career advancement opportunities, which deeply impacted him. Yet, his resilience and unwavering commitment to his family have always been a source of inspiration for me.
This personal connection to overcoming adversity has shaped my journalistic philosophy. I am committed to amplifying diverse voices and advocating for those facing systemic challenges, striving to uncover untold stories.
My work has been featured across platforms such as News Corp Australia, Newsline, Triple R Radio, 3ZZZ (92.3FM), The First Serve, The Roar, and The Inner Sanctum. I also provide live commentary for NPL and NPL1 soccer matches with Football Victoria.
As a Breaking News Reporter at the Herald Sun, I've covered major stories including the Corio explosion, the Daylesford tragedy, youth crime machete attacks, the Hunter Valley bus crash, and the Matildas' FIFA World Cup journey, with my work published across News Corp mastheads nationwide.
I also completed a mentorship with the Melbourne Press Club, furthering my commitment to professional growth. I am eager to continue developing my skills and collaborating with respected journalists and media professionals to broaden my experience.
